The Captain's Ghost
The Captain's Ghost is a maritime spirit—a figure in a captain's coat or naval uniform who appears on old ships, in harborside inns, or along the coast. He is often linked to a shipwreck, a mutiny, or a captain who went down with his vessel and is said to return to watch over the living or to complete some unfinished duty.

Where He Appears
Sightings are reported on restored ships, in museums with nautical exhibits, and in taverns that once served sailors. Footsteps on deck, the smell of salt and tar, and the sound of bells or whistles are sometimes mentioned. He is rarely hostile; more often he is described as pacing, looking out to sea, or standing at the wheel.

In Lore
Sea ghosts form a large category in folklore. The Captain is one of the most recognizable. For more on spirits and place, see Haunted Places.
