The Child Spirit

The Child Spirit is an apparition of a young child—often in period clothing—reported in houses, schools, and hospitals. He or she may be seen in a nursery, at the top of the stairs, or in a garden. Laughter, the sound of a ball bouncing, or the creak of a rocking chair are sometimes attributed to this spirit.

Context

Stories of child ghosts are among the most emotionally charged. We record them with care and do not sensationalize. The Child Spirit is often linked to a specific tragedy or to a child who died in the building; in some accounts the spirit is playful rather than sad, as if still at play.
