The bell rang at midnight though no one was in the tower. The sexton climbed the stairs and found the rope still swinging. He said he saw a man in old clothes, his back turned, pulling the rope. When he spoke, the figure vanished. The bell stopped. The man had been the previous sexton, dead twenty years. He had failed to ring the alarm the night of the fire.
